Europe's Gas Car Ban Is About To Die
1+ hour, 15+ min ago (283+ words) Europe will reverse its plan to ban sales of new combustion-engine vehicles by 2035, a senior European Parliament member confirmed Friday. With the official announcement slated for next week, that marks the end of a long, bitter dispute as to whether the European Union will follow the U.S. lead in rolling back emissions requirements, or charge ahead like China. I'd argue that's a simplistic and short-sighted view of the situation; the rise of Tesla, BYD and others proves that people absolutely do want the hassle-free ownership experience and simplicity of an EV. They just won't pay a major premium for it, and Western automakers' supply chain focus on gas cars has made it hard for them to offer competitive EVs at comparable prices. Germany has a world-beating EV on its hands with the BMW iX3. Now it has to win over shoppers. That's…...
Massless Structural Batteries Will Transform Vehicle Design

A team of researchers from Chalmers University of Technology and KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden have produced a structural battery that performs ten times better than any previous model." The new battery prototype is largely constructed of carbon fiber which serves a multifunctional role as an electrode, conductor, and a load-bearing material that is durable enough to compete with other commonly used construction materials. The breakthrough model is described in detail in an open-access paper published in the scientific journal Advanced Energy & Sustainability Research, "Previous attempts to make…...
More Buyers Are Ditching EVs And Choosing Gas Again
2+ hour, 11+ min ago (434+ words) A new study from EY reveals rising ICE demand as EV interest fades amid political shifts, rollout delays, and global policy reversals The auto industry's pivot to electric vehicles was never expected to be seamless, but a recent shift in buyer sentiment suggests the transition may be hitting more resistance than anticipated. According to a new study, a growing number of car shoppers are once again leaning toward combustion engines, reversing some of the momentum EVs had built in recent years. A report from professional services firm EY indicates that EV adoption is slowing worldwide, in part due to shifting policies like those recently enacted in the United States. Ford turns to stepped-up tech and cooperation with police to thwart F-150 pickup thieves
2+ hour, 16+ min ago (639+ words) It is the latest cat-and-mouse move that the automaker hopes will help customers avoid the costly and frustrating process that occurs when vehicles are swiped and includes a feature that won't allow an engine to start even if a key fob is in the pickup. Motor vehicle thefts recently have been on the decline in the U.S. after several years of increases. Still, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that more than 850,000 vehicles were stolen in the U.S. in 2024, pegging losses at $8 billion. But thefts dropped 23% during the first six months of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024, according to an analysis by the National Insurance Crime Bureau. Ford's F-150 was in the top 10 of most stolen models. Ford's Stolen Vehicle Services, which was launched with the 2024 F-150 model year, added a "Start Inhibit" feature that allows owners to disable an F-150's engine…...
Could self-driving cars be on a collision course with Zohran Mamdani?
2+ hour, 32+ min ago (531+ words) Since this summer, Google's self-driving car company Waymo has been testing eight of its Jaguar I-PACE autonomous vehicles in most of Manhattan and parts of northern Brooklyn, with "trained safety specialists" (humans) sitting behind the wheel. So far, they've logged thousands of miles in the city. "There's potential here for massive job loss, and also a fundamental change in the service that New Yorkers are provided," Desai told City & State. Desai said she wants to see a moratorium put in place "on further testing but also on approving self-driving cars to operate as taxis. Desai said she hasn't spoken with Mamdani about the issue, but it's one she hopes to bring it up through the transition committee. Slouching toward automation? Or not falling behind? Some see Waymo "and a self-driving future more broadly "as inevitable. It's not entirely clear why…...
This Unassuming Volkswagen Beetle Packs 600 Horsepower. Here's How It Happened
2+ hour, 34+ min ago (486+ words) At first glance, this Marathon Blue Volkswagen Beetle 1303 looks pretty normal. But when you take a closer look, you can tell it's something special. Without a hint of engine noise, the rear wheels spin up, tire smoke billows, and tiny bits of rubber spray across the asphalt. It's a monster. The source of this spectacle isn't an air-cooled boxer engine, but a modern three-phase asynchronous electric motor. For purists, that might sound like heresy'can you really do that to a Beetle? But from the builders' point of view, it's the perfect fusion of an iconic classic with cutting-edge electric-drive technology. Knepper Bugs & More: Project RS-E Underneath, almost everything is new: the suspension is largely borrowed from a Porsche 944, paired with components from KW, Bilstein, and Kerscher. The brakes come from the 944 Turbo S, with Porsche 964 discs up front. Grip is…...
The 2025 Renault 4 E-Tech Is The Retro-Charmer City Car You Didn't Know You Wanted
2+ hour, 34+ min ago (1255+ words) Renault had a blinding 2025. Its usual fare has been going down well, but its new electric lineup hit the road and has been making a lot of people happy. First, the retro-tastic Renault 5 in all the lurid hues you can imagine. Then Alpine's A290 with "Renault 5-but-faster" energy added some spice to the mix. And now, we get a new Renault 4. All are retro-inspired in the best way, but with some of the finest modern EV tech you can find in Europe right now. It's fair-ish to say that Renault's line-up wasn't setting the world alight before it figured out that looking back was the best way to look forward, but now it looks like there's little stopping it. The 5 makes people grin when they see it, and get very smiley when they drive it." So can the 4 do the same? The…...
Britain will ban new petrol and diesel cars despite Europe set to ditch plans
2+ hour, 54+ min ago (421+ words) BRITAIN will press ahead with banning new petrol and diesel cars despite Europe preparing to ditch its own plans. Downing Street said it remained "committed" to phasing out all new non-zero emission car and van sales by 2035 and that there was "no change" in policy. Brussels had also planned to outlaw combustion engines by the middle of the next decade but is now lining up a climbdown after heavy lobbying from Germany and Italy. Manfred Weber, head of the biggest group in the European Parliament, declared yesterday: "The end of combustion engines is history." He added: "Good news for the automotive industry and millions of employees." Former Aston Martin boss Dr Andy Palmer warned Britain would struggle to go it alone because of how closely its car market is tied to Europe. Read More on Politics Wes Streeting takes swipe…...
